Instructions
  1. Cut beef into 3cm chunks and season with salt and pepper

  2. Heat oil in a large pot and brown beef on all sides, remove and set aside

  3. Dice onions and carrots, cook in the same pot for 5 minutes

  4. Add flour and stir for 1 minute

  5. Gradually add ale and stock, stirring constantly

  6. Return beef to pot, bring to boil then simmer covered for 1.5 hours

  7. Transfer filling to pie dish and cover with pastry

  8. Bake at 200°C for 25-30 minutes until golden

  9. Boil potatoes until tender, mash with milk and butter

  10. Steam peas for 3-4 minutes

  11. Serve pie with mashed potatoes and peas
